Hi, I’m Kate — the person behind Frozen Redhead.
I’m a solo traveller, long-distance hiker and aurora hunter drawn to the remote landscapes of the North. I travel across Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland, exploring wild trails, Arctic roads and places where the weather often decides the plan.
I previously worked at an astronomical institute in the solar department, where I studied and observed the Sun. This gave me a deeper understanding of solar activity and the science behind the northern lights.
Through Frozen Redhead, I share honest stories from the trail, practical trip inspiration and the realities of planning independent journeys through remote northern landscapes. I want to show not only the beautiful moments, but also the uncertainty, preparation, mistakes and challenges behind every adventure.
I loved the work, but I did not want to understand the northern lights only through data and observations. I wanted to see them with my own eyes. I wanted to experience real Arctic conditions, feel the cold, travel through remote landscapes and understand what life in the North actually feels like.
One day, I woke up and told myself: now or never. I bought a plane ticket to Iceland.
I spent three unforgettable weeks there with no money, no real travel experience and no idea what to expect — yet I had the time of my life. By the time I returned home, the decision had already been made. I wanted to keep travelling through the Arctic, explore increasingly remote places and plan expeditions of my own – while continuing to chase the northern lights across the North.
My Story
Since childhood, I have been deeply fascinated by space, the northern lights and remote places shaped by extreme conditions. I remember researching the coldest places on Earth and imagining what it would be like to experience them for myself.
I always knew I wanted to travel north, but there was always an obstacle — school, work, lack of money, or all of them at once.
Several years ago, I got a job in the solar physics department of an astronomical institute. I monitored solar activity and made forecasts based on my observations. A dream come true, right? And yet, something was still missing.
What began as a fascination with the night sky became something much bigger: aurora hunting, solo travel, long-distance hiking and increasingly ambitious expedition planning. What started with Arctic road trips gradually evolved into multi-day hikes, longer self-supported journeys and plans for demanding polar expeditions. With every trip, I push a little further — into more remote places, harsher conditions and greater independence.
Frozen Redhead is where I document that journey — not only the beauty, but also the uncertainty, preparation, mistakes and challenges behind it.
